Cebu - It’s green and go for the Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) Beach Volley tournament on January 31 at the Wiggy’s Beach Resort in Liloan, Cebu .
CESAFI beach volley tournament director Dr. Danilo Villadolid said the event will be played for three weekends.
“I called for a meeting and I let them decide on the date that the tournament should be played. This was supposedly scheduled last December but due to many activities, we decided to move it on January”, said Villadolid.
Defending champions University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) and University of San Carlos (USC), in the women and men’s divisions, respectively, will try to retain their titles in a quiet tough way as they will be paired with new partners this time.
USJ-R’s Michelle Simbajon will team up with Joy Bonita since her former teammate Genie Sabas graduated already.
USJ-R’s toughest rival, Southwestern University (SWU) will field in Danika Yolanda Gendrauli and Lorie May Layno.
In the men’s bracket, USC’s Roderick Arenasa will be paired with Kennith Bensig, a rookie in the beach volley scene. USC is gunning for a rare three-peat.
In its grandslam bid, USC is expected to face rough sailing against USJ-R, which will tap the services of Ariel Carumba and Louijie Tipgos.
Completing the list of competing schools are the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), University of Cebu (UC), Cebu Doctors’ University (CDU), University of the Visayas (UV), and Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT).
“Expect the best games to be played in this year’s tournament because all the players have prepared for this and they had a very long preparation,” said Villadolid. — Marigold P. Lebumfacil (THE FREEMAN)
