CEBU – Talisay City swept all titles available in the Gullas Cup 2008-1st District of Cebu Sports Tournament at its own turf, topping men’s basketball as well as the men and women’s volleyball.
And as if it was a scripted action, the top three squads in each sporting event featured in this Congressman Eduardo Gullas-sponsored tilt were the same with Talisay on top followed by Carcar and Minglanilla.
A day after its heart-breaking loss in the 4th Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup for Women, Talisay’s playing coach Norvie Labuga and Florian Gutierrez led their teams to crowning glory.
The Talisay volleybelles defeated Carcar in a thrilling four-set match, 25-18, 17-25, 25-15, 25-13.
The Talisaynon spikers, who are managed by Edgar Mabunay, also fended off Carcar to bag the men’s volleyball diadem.
Labuga and Gutierrez can now have a good night sleep as they also collared the Most Valuable Player awards in their respective divisions.
“Grabe kaayo uy. Kapoy kaayo ming tanan tapos niabot pa gyud og fourth set ang championship namo parehas sa GUV Cup. Maayo na lang gani kay ni daog mi. Bonus pa gyud tong pagka-MVP nako,” said Gutierrez.
In the individual awards, Arvie Cabañero ran away with the MVP honors in men’s basketball. The bull-strong power forward automatically made it to the Mythical Five alongside Diosdado Iglamo Jr. (center), Reymund Tabar (small forward), Clifford Bargamento (point guard), and Clint Florido (off guard).
In men’s volleyball, Labuga was named MVP. He was joined in the Mythical Six by Carcar’s Ariel Carumba, Bon Vincent Estrera, Talisay’s Junrey Tapia, Constancio Estrella, and Minglanilla’s Nathaniel Abellano.
In the distaff side, Gutierrez comprised the mythical team along with Carcar’s Apple Saraum and Ivy Abella, and Erika Camille Verano. — Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (THE FREEMAN)
