Apas nails first ever CCG title

CEBU – Barangay Apas etched its name in stone after winning the first ever overall championship of the Philippine Sports Commission-backed Children’s Community Games yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center. The Apas jocks finished the two-day event with a total of 186 points.

Apas only had 49 points in athletics as against Talamban’s 86. Also, they did not win a title in ball games, but its overall performance in ball games was more than enough to catapult them to resounding triumph.

Aside from grabbing the top honors, Apas also owned the fastest girl in Vanessa Fuentes in the 12-under action initiated by Philippine Sports Commissioner Fr. Vicente “Vic” L. Uy, SVD. Fuentes clinched a double gold after ruling the century dash and the 200m run.

Miguel Sembrano, on the other hand, proved too hot to handle for his foes on the way to cart away three gold medals in boys athletics via the 100m and 200m run and long jump.

In the leaderboard, Mabolo finished second with 174 points followed by Mambaling with 127. Erstwhile leader Talamban slipped to fourth with 115 points, while Hipodromo completed the top five finishers with 102 points.

Talamban posted a 1-2 finish in volleyball. Its girls team subdued Apas, 20-25, 25-20, 25-15 in come-from-behind fashion, while its boys counterparts settled runner-up to Pit-os, 25-22, 25-20.

Kalubihan also stole part of the spotlight by sweeping all golds at stake in table tennis.

James Impuesto and Jeremae Saromines led Kalubihan’s charge after winning their matches in the singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Their tandem ended with an 11-5, 9-11, 11-8, 13-11 disposition of Mabolo.

In chess, the streetchildren composing the Task Force squad took home the gold in the girls competition with 7.0 points, while Pasil dominated the boys division with 13.5 points, just half a point ahead of Apas.

Kyle Sevillanno was the best in board 1 and Petcef Luga in board 2, while KC Mirala topped the girls board 1 and Girlie Encepido in board 2.
