Something different

CEBU - There will be something new that would be featured in the Christmas Fun Golf Classic of Alta Vista Golf and Country Club (AVGCC) set next weekend.

There would be the usual hole-in-one prizes that would include a Kia Carens courtesy of Gateway Motors (Kia) Cebu.

The event would also continue to use the individual strokeplay format. The registration fees have been lowered to allow more participants. There would also be the usual mulligan (one per nine that would be sold). Proceeds of the mulligan would be donated on the evening of December 14, the awards night, to the Sisters of Mary Girls Town of Talisay City.

The difference will be in the entertainment for the awards ceremony. There would be a show featuring the scholars of Amparito Lhuillier, who will be presenting their own rendition of Mamma Mia, the musical.

From the reaction of my fellow members of the tournament committee, it seems that many are excited to see the show, which I actually had already seen a couple of months ago when the troupe was at the Sisters of Mary School in Talisay.

I wasn’t able to catch the entire show, which is also the reason why I am as excited as the others to watch the show during the awards night.

To make sure that we finish early, the organizers are asking the participants to come to dinner promptly at 6 p.m. so that the show can start by 7 and we can continue with the rest of the program for the awards ceremony right after that.

Times are hard, but then the committee has been able to bring in enough sponsors for the tournament and hopefully we shall all have a merry Christmas at the club.

If you haven’t signed up yet, the entry fee is only P2,000 and giveaways are a golf umbrella and a cap or a glove. You can choose what goes with the huge umbrella that surely makes registering for the event worthwhile.

By the way, this is open exclusively to members of the club, but non-members can play if they are invited by the sponsors.

I wonder if the Philippine Olympic Festival set to start on the 16th of this month in Cagayan de Oro City is really pushing through.

While I do know that our athletes are raring to compete, especially the members of the judo team under my long-time teammate Atty. Vicente Fernandez II, it seems that there is no definite word yet from the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), which is organizing the event.

The POF is a good competition, but then I think there is so much that can be done to improve it.

I hope that the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) would soon revive the Philippine National Games, which was a very good venue for athletes to showcase their skills against the members of the national team.

I’ll probably get an inside track on this when I get to meet PSC Chairman William ‘Butch’ Ramirez.

MILESTONES: It’s a bit late, but I’d like to once again wish my best friend Christopher Rey M. Tio and his wife Julie all the best as they opened Eyes Candy at the third level of Ayala Center Cebu last weekend. This is a shop catering specially to the eye wear need of kids.

Happy birthday greetings go to my comadre Desiree ‘Cookie’ Queblatin-Chan of Southwind Travel, who is turning another year older tomorrow.

More power! (THE FREEMAN)
