4th Alta Vista Jungolf Challenge: Tan and Gabasa pace class A

CEBU - Edsel Lance Tan shook off the first day jitters and moved up to the top of the leaderboard yesterday in the second round for class A of the boys’ division in the 4th Alta Vista Jungolf Challenge at the AVGCC course in Pardo, this city.

Irina Gabasa, also of Alta Vista, also fared so much better yesterday than in the first round to further pad her lead in the girls’ category for the 15 to 17 years old age bracket.

Tan, who opened with a ten-over-par 82 strokes Tuesday, improved by six strokes yesterday as he shot four-over-par 76 to move to a two-stroke lead. Agustin Mata of Aguinaldo is at second spot with 160 on rounds of 82 and 78.

Three players share the third spot with 161 strokes apiece. They are Jonar Austria of Camp Aguinaldo (82-79), Franz Olea of Cebu Country Club (82-79), and first day leader Jobim Carlos of The Country Club (78-83).

In the distaff side, Gabasa fired a two-day total of 157 strokes on rounds of 83 and 74. At second spot is Kristine Leonen of Del Monte with 169 (92-77) while Abby Olea is third with 175 (91-84).

CLASS B (13 TO 14 YEARS OLD)

Miguel Tabuena of Alabang continued to set the pace in this category with a two-day total of 145 strokes on rounds of 74 and one-under-par 71. 

Lloyd Jefferson Go of CCC is at second spot with 148 (74-74) and tied for third with 152 apiece are Kenneth Kano of Aguinaldo (77-75) and Alta Vista’s Gio Gandiongco (76-76).

One stroke behind is Mactan’s Vijay Vasandani with rounds of 80 and 73 strokes.

In the girls’ division, Daniella Uy of Valley Golf holds a four-shot lead with her total of 162 strokes on rounds of 85 and 77.

At second spot is Apple Fudolin of Del Monte with 166 (85-81) and at third is Mactan’s Juily Vasandani with 172 (92-80).

Competition for classes A and B and the Special division for the new graduates of jungolf, is played over three days or 54 holes while the rest of the field play only for two days.

CLASS C (11 TO 12)

Yash Majmudar of Manila Southwoods coasted to the lead for the boys’ category with an opening round of 80 strokes.

Running second is Raymart Tolentino of Valley Golf with 89 followed by Del Monte’s Gabriel Villanoy with 93.

Rachita Vasandani of Mactan paces the girls’ category with 85 strokes followed by Bianca Pagdanganan of Aguinaldo with 88 and Dana Gonzalez also of Aguinaldo with 89.

CLASS D (9 TO 10)

Kristoffer Arevalo of Aguinaldo paces the boys’ division with 75 strokes followed by Lance Uy of Valley Golf with 83. Alta Vista’s Wei Wei Gao is third with 91.

In the girls’ division, Lois Kaye Go of CCC leads the field with 83 followed by Pamela Mariano of Del Monte with 91 and Alta Vista’s Joan Hortelano with 96.

CLASS E (6 to 8)

In the nine-hole contest for the youngest class, Mactan’s Shailesh Vasandani leads the boys’ class with 40 strokes along with Del Monte’s Jose Emmanuel Sajulga. Tied for third spot are Alex Delfin Trinos of Club Intramuros and Alta Vista’s Wei Yu Gao with 42 apiece.

In the girls’ class, Junia Louise Gabasa leads the girls’ division with 43 followed by Angela Pearl Mangana of Mactan with 47.

SPECIAL DIVISION (18 TO 21)

JR Quiachon of The Country Club continues to lead this category after two rounds with his total score of 158 on rounds of 81 and 77.

At second spot is Del Monte’s Louie Stephen Mariano with 161 (78-83) and at third is Charles Thomas Tiu of Mactan with 175 (93-82). (THE FREEMAN)
