Toring rules LBL 3-point shootout
CEBU - Former UV Lancers star Rene Toring of AC Sports had to pass through two playoffs before claiming the 3-point king title of the Lapu-Lapu Basketball League (LBL) the other night at the Lapu-Lapu City hardcourt. He outgunned his teammate Resty Getubig in the final round, 17-13.
Toring, who just hit 10 points in the elimination, had to survived in the playoffs against another teammate Alex Cainglet and Mark Bolo as they were locked up in a three-way tie.
During the playoff, Toring nailed 17 markers to eliminate Cainglet and Bolo, who managed only 11 points apiece. Thus, Toring became the 10th player to advance along with Aaron Pancho, Jonas Bensi, Eldred Bontilao, Maui Arong, Val Arong, Gestoni Casquejo, Tony Inoc, Ronan Isidro, and Getubig.
Toring had to go through another playoff, this time against Bensi as they both finished with 16 points. The winner will earn the right to challenge Getubig, who gained automatic final berth for pumping in 21 points.
In the championship, Toring sustained his sweet-shooting touch to defeat Getubig and go home P5,000 richer.
High school Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) MVP John Marty Pearce of UC was the youngest among the 25 entries. It turned out Pearce got the lowest score with only four points.
After failing in his bid for the 3-point crown, Pearce went on to win the Skills Challenge, finishing the race in just 27 seconds. – GGM (THE FREEMAN)
