UC sweeps CESAFI table tennis

-

CEBU - The University of Cebu (UC) Players came up with a clean sweep in the table tennis event of the 2008 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) recently at Hua Ching Foundation table tennis center in Mandaue City.

For the first time in CESAFI history, UC collected all golds at stake in both the secondary and tertiary divisions.

The Motels and the Tormises ruled the individual events in separate divisions.

In the tertiary level, Michael Motel topped the men’s singles, while his sister Mary Grace ruled the distaff side.

The tandem of Jay Impuesto and Jonathan Jacalan won the men’s doubles, Mary Grace Motel and Marian Ycot reigned supreme in the women’s doubles and Glendo Nayre and Jennifer Jacalan dominated the mixed doubles.

In the secondary level, Dannel Jay Tormis got the gold in the boys singles. His elder sister Elona Dane snatched the gilt in the girls’ action. The Tormis siblings also won the mixed doubles.

John Paul Baay and Val Stephen Jaca dominated the boys doubles, while teammates Girly Apas and Candy Babalcon lorded it over in the girls division.

UC’s biggest victory came in the collegiate team competition.

The UC men’s team, composed of Motel, Nayre,Impuesto and Jacalan, proved too much to handle for USC’s Carlo Bernados, Evan Ramos, Loyd Bayang and Ray Francis Flordeli. USJ-R, led by Judah Ray Gantuangco, settled for third.

In the women’s division, UC bagged the gold through the efforts of Mary Grace and Mary Angelie Motel, Jennifer Jacalan and Marian Ycot. They edged out USJ-R, which was incidentally by a former UC player in Sherry Lynn Gantuangco.

After the CESAFI action, coach Jessica Jawad-Honoridez is preparing her wards for the PRISAA regional and national games.   – Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (THE FREEMAN)
