Badian tops GUV Cup cluster 2

CEBU – Team Badian once again asserted its dominance in cluster 2 after beating Boljoon in straight sets during their championship game of the 4th Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup For Women in Moalboal last night.

Badian pulled away a 25-13, 25-12 victory over Boljoon, cluster 2A’s top squad.

Boljoon was hoping to bounce back from a slump last year but failed anew as Badian was well-prepared for them.

Boljoon was the first cluster 2 title holder, but it has been Badian dominating the group for the past three years.

Last year, Boljoon had its worst performance in the tournament when it even failed to advance to the cluster championship after losing to Oslob during their sub-cluster battle.

Mechelle Matugina decided not to play for Boljoon this year leaving the team without their star player.

Boljoon however found a new jewel in Russel Gernani, a former player of Southwestern University.

Gernani, however, could only do so much as Badian had a more complete team.

Boljoon was able to match up defensively against Badian yesterday, but could not keep up in terms of offense.

Before meeting Boljoon, Badian had to play two games yesterday before advancing to the final battle.

Boljoon may be well rested since they had their sub-cluster action the other Sunday and got to see Badian’s players before their encounter, but these did not matter a lot to Badian as they got to retain their crown with ease.    

Despite that loss, however, Boljoon still gets to represent cluster 2 with Badian later this year since the top two teams of each cluster will get a chance to dispute for the overall title among the municipalities involved in this Cebu Volleyball Association (CEVA) organized event.

This Saturday, action shifts to Tuburan for the cluster 3 elimination.

There are six teams in cluster 3 – Barili, Aloguinsan, Pinamungajan, Balamban, Asturias and Tuburan. – THE FREEMAN
