Sta. Lucia Golf Tour success

CEBU - Alta Vista Golf and Country Club looks headed to another overall title in the Santa Lucia Golf Tour after a sweep of all four divisions last weekend in the Cebu-leg of the event, which the club hosted.

Feeling very much at home, the Alta Vista team swept division 1 with Dennis Canoy and Alex Yeo winning the title, second place going to Enrico Solon and Jun Su7an, and third place to Irina Gabasa and Victor Gocela.

The team also took the top two spots for division 2 courtesy of winners Alex Garcia and Marlo Cugtas and runners-up Ramon Sebastian and Richard Lim.

Richard also became the star of the tournament when he aced hole number 6 and won a golf set for the feat. The ace was witnessed by his partner and my big brother Ramon U. Sebastian and brothers Rommel and Aaron Dimabuyo of Orchard, who settled for third place in their class.

Nestor Mendoza and Gerry Quintos finished first for group 3 while the duo of Deo Gabasa (Irina’s dad) and Benedict Uy were second.

In the seniors’ class, buddies Felix Villanueva and Rolando Alberto won the title.

Alta Vista now has a total of 112 points, 30 clear of closest pursuer Rancho Palos Verdes. Unless of course the team fails to score a single point in the final leg in Manila next month, it would be safe to say that the club title is in the bag for Alta Vista.

I am hoping for the best as the team heads to the final leg in Luzon next month.

By the way, Alta Vista also had players taking the individual titles like Ekong Solon for the championship class, junior golfer Gio Gandiongco for class A, and Alex Garcia for class B.

With still over a month left for the La Salle team to brag as winners of the 6th Ateneo-La Salle Golf Classic in Cebu (the billing changes depending on the host), the Green Archers are now busy stacking our racks in preparation for next month’s event at the Cebu Country Club.

To inspire the team in Cebu, emails about the success of the La Salle teams in Luzon have also been sent to the egroup.

One thing that I did notice from the mail sent yesterday by Bobby Martinez is that there are a good number of Cebuano players, who played for La Salle in the Samsung Inter-Scholastic Tournament played late last month at the Valley Golf and Country Club in Antipolo, Rizal.

Foremost among them is Charles ‘Chuckie’ Hong, who is the cocaptain of the De La Salle University team. Chuckie was still in his elementary years, when I started writing about his exploits in the Cebu junior golf events.

Now, he is a topnotch player not only for DLSU, but also played for Manila Southwoods in the PAL Interclub early this year in Bacolod.

I surely hope Chuckie along with his sister Mary Kim can play for the La Salle team of Cebu next month. Maybe their parents George and Jojo of HEAD Construction and Casing Engineering can help make that happen.

Other Cebuanos in the La Salle line-up for the Samsung event were sisters Jyra and Hannah Wong, daughters of Hector and Jenny Wong, also big supporters of the junior golf activities in Cebu.

If you spent at least a year in a La Salle school, you can contact our team captain Nino Bascon or send email to nimrod@mozcom.com so we can sign you up.

MILESTONES: I’d like to greet my mistah Edwin Secillano a happy birthday. The same also goes to our former sportswriter Sona Mae Povadora.

Belated birthday greetings go to Alicia Casiño, who turned a year older last Monday.

More power! (THE FREEMAN)
