Korean tandem tops September Monthly Medal of Alta Vista

CEBU - The all-Korean duo of Kim Kwang Seok and Howard Chung bagged the top honors for Group I in last weekend’s September Monthly Medal of Alta Vista Golf and Country Club.

The duo scored a total of 103 points to run away with the premiere division crown. Kim had two-over-par 52 points in the Molave scoring system while Chung scored 51.

First runner-up was the tandem of Alex Yeo and junior golfer Emy Lou Tan with 92 points. Yeo scored 53 while Tan had 39. Enrico Solon (53) and Tony Amor (39) finished with 91 points, which was good for third place.

In Group II, Jung Sung Ha and Wendell Yap combined for 101 points to win the crown. Jung shot 49 points while Yap had 52.

Second place for the category went to the father and daughter duo of Deo and Irina Gabasa. Deo scored 41 points while Irina fired an even-par 54 points giving them 95 and a victory via the countback. Third place went to Ben Yu (55) and Ricky Aznar (40) also with 95.

Another Korean duo figured prominently as Choi Yi Hwa and Kim Dae Hyun topped Group III with 80 points. Choi scored 45 while Kim made 35.

Second place went to James Tolentino (40) and Richard Li (37) with 77 points followed by Nestor Mendoza (40) and Gerry Quintos (36) with 76.

The Seniors’ division crown went to Rolando Alberto and Felix Villanueva with 101 points. Alberto scored 51 while Villanueva made 50.

Rolly Santos (42) and Virgilio Chua (36) finished second with 78 and third place went to former collegiate basketball teammates Vince Colina (41) and Bobby Barria (33) with 74 points.

Enrico Solon’s tee shot landed five feet from the cup on hole No. 6 to give him the special prize for nearest the pin. The most accurate drive on hole No. 11 was made by Emelio Tan, Emy Lou’s father, whose ball came to rest five inches from the center line.

In the individual event, Irina Gabasa topped class A with 54 points while Victor Gocela, her partner in the Santa Lucia Golf Tour took the runner-up honors with 53 after edging Enrico Solon in the countback.

Jung Sung Hwa bagged the class B title with 49 followed by Choi Yi Hwa as runner-up with 45.

The class C title went to the indefatigable Jerry Ong Uy with 42 points and runner-up was Son Hye Seon with 39.

Ben Yu won the seniors’ plum with a tournament-best 55 points and Rolando Alberto with 51 was the runner-up.—NLQ (THE FREEMAN)
