13th Milo Olympics: UC and SHS-J remain on top

CEBU - The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters carved out four more records in athletics as they pulled away from the field in the second division, while Sacred Heart School-Jesuit (SHS-J) stayed on top of the heap in the elementary level despite clinching only one gold in the second day of action in the 13th Milo Little Olympics-Visayas yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

UC now stands with 16 golds, nine silvers and six bronzes. Two golds came from table tennis behind the efforts of Elona Dane Tormis and John Paul Baay.

UC’s Vlessica Jagna recorded the event’s first treble by topping the girls 800m run and 3,000m steeplechase. Her teammates Jasper Lance Basister, Leslie Abad and Sarah Napoles bagged their second golds in discus throw and long jump events.

Basister reigned supreme in boys discus throw, while Abad lorded it over in the disstaff side with a distance of 24.58m, surpassing last year’s mark set by Sunday Joy Modelo at 22.58m. Napoles, for her part, got her second gold at the expense of another UC bet Stella Marri Malingin in girls long jump.

The other UC jock who picked up two golds, so far, was Jee Ann Racoma who dominated the 100m hurdles and the 800m run.

Junrey Andales and Carl Jeanette Malazarte also contributed a gold each for UC in record-establishing fashion. Andales ruled the boys 400m hurdles with a time of 1’02”84, while Mazarte won the 3, 000m steeplechase with a 10’58”93 clocking.

Andales, however, missed another golden opportunity due to fatigue and settled with just a bronze medal in the 800m run.
