The University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers got a big lift from Alfie Cabañero and Aldwin Felisario to dominate the smaller Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Wildkittens, 95-79, in the secondary match of the 2008 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
From a 41-all standoff at halftime, Felisario ignited a third quarter run to give the Baby Lancers a 53-48 lead for good. Cabañero later took part in the scoring spree to help the UV bantams rip the game apart.
Cabañero, whose hoop skills were harnessed during the Inter-City League where he played for the Talisay Aquastars, paced the Baby Lancers with 22 points. He keyed a fiery uprising in the windup as the Baby Lancers joined the University of Cebu (UC) Junior Webmasters atop the leaderboard with similar clean 3-0 slates.
Felisario, whose six straight points incited a searing rally that vaulted the Lancers to a commanding 69-51 lead in the third period, added 16 points, while Jan Michael Auditor banged in 18 markers.
The Wildkittens, who staged a big run in the second period to erase a 14-point deficit, 15-29, courtesy of Mark Tallo Jr.’s explosion, were topped by Jerry Taghoy and Lemuel Sanchez with 17 points apiece. Tallo finished with 14 markers as he baffled the Baby Lancers with his excellent playmaking skills.
The Wildkittens were actually ahead by a hairline, 48-47, but that was the best they could muster as they started to misfire their targets after that due to UV’s porous defensive stance. A 6-0 swing set up the stage for the Baby Lancers to put the game beyond CIT’s reach. (GGM)
