Seven-time CESAFI champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers used a furious second-quarter attack to defang the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras, 56-45, at the start of the 1st Mayor Lionel E. Bacaltos Cup Inter-Collegiate Basketball Tournament on Saturday night at the Bonifacio R. Bacaltos Sports Centrum in the municipality of Sibonga south of Cebu.
Earlier, the Asian College of Technology (ACT) Cyber Knights were in complete command of the match to humiliate the Don Bosco College Greywolves, 78-54.
Interestingly, UV won despite none of its players cashing in double figures.
The Green Lancers trailed by a hairline at the end of the opening period, 9-10, but turned the tables on the Cobras using a blistering 23-9 rally to close the first half with a 32-19 advantage. UV padded its lead to 45-29 to baffle the Cobras the rest of the way.
In the first game, the Cyber Knights were never threatened after enjoying an early 22-15 edge. The Greywolves pulled within 32-35, but ACT quickly put the situation under control by responding with a 23-16 run in the third quarter.
The Cyber Knights then mercilessly pummeled the Greywolves in the windup, 20-9, to seal the 22-point blowout. – EBV
