Cebu teams win, lose in Dapitan beach volley

- Caecent No-ot Magsumbol -

Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte – Three pairs representing different Cebu squads, came out unpredictable, like typhoon Frank.

One squad topped its bracket, the other is unsure to make it to Dapitan, while the other is totally out of contention in the inaugural staging of the Dapitan City Beach Volleyball Championships at Dapitan Beach Front Hotel.

Cebu’s Florian Gutierez and Jusabelle Brillo leads Bracket A with a 2-0 win-loss card.

The duo opened their bid with a 21-12 victory over a team from Dapitan City Volleyball Association (DACIVA). After a brief rest, Gutierrez and Brillo gave Bacolod’s University of St. La Salle a 21-11 beating.

Another Cebu team of Marites Natad and Erika Verano representing Heart Vit couldn’t get out of Dumaguete City because of typhoon Frank. They have until 2 pm yesterday to make it to Dapitan.

On the other hand, crowd drawer and title favorites Southwestern University, with the most sought-after Cebu high school standout Danika Gendrauli and Lorimae Layno, missed the semifinal round after finishing with a 1-2 record.

Gendrauli and Layno got seasick and vomited on the boat to Dapitan after typhoon Frank wrecked havoc on the seas. Despite their predicament, the duo beat a team from Foundation University of Dumaguete 21-18 in their first game.

That was their only win. Gendrauli and Layno, trained by Coach Janette Ponte, bowed to Kay Aplasca and April Hingpit of Negros 17-21.

The girls tried but failed in their third game, going down 19-21 to Dapitan’s Angeles Law Office.

The Dapitan Tourism and Investment Council Incorporated organized this Philippine Sports Commissioned sanctioned event. Support comes from the city and provincial government of Dapitan courtesy of Mayor Dominador Jalosjos and Board Member Bullet Jalosjos.
