Negrense captures first crown

-

A visiting Negrense emerged as the first player to win a title in the 13th Gullas Cup tennis tournament yesterday at the Casino Español de Cebu tennis courts.

Jesamel Singson of San Carlos City bested the more favored Clarrisa Fuentes via super tie-break, 2-6, 6-2, 10-4 to clinch the girls 12-under tiara.

Sally Mae Siso, for her part, is bound to become the most decorated player in this PHILTA Group-II action as she booked two final appearances through the girls 14 and 18-under categories aside from staying strong in the 16-under class.

Sally Mae proved too much to handle for Hannah Espinosa, carving out a lopsided 6-1, 6-1 victory over her former doubles partner in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Meet.

Sally, thus, set up a girls 14-under title showdown with Janice Cañete, who ousted Cheska Tabotabo, 6-3,6-3.

In the girls 18-under, Sally Mae booked a final ticket with an easy 6-1, 6-2 disposition of Lovelie Soquiño. She will face next German Jacquiline Chalas, who kicked out Sally Mae’s elder sister Sallydine, 6-2, 6-4.

Sally Mae bolstered her chances of a treble by barging into the girls 16-under semifinals together with Cindy Gerapusco, Anna Bienes, and Kristel Mae Buenacosa.

On the other hand, the boys action only has four players left in Niño Siso, Kennex Abadia, Jun Montalbo and Lowell Lloyd Cañete.

At the Cebu Country Club, Ryle Joseph Singson will face Christopher Encarnacion for the unisex 10-under crown, while Vince Marc Tabotabo takes on John Michael Necesario for the boys 12-under plum.

Singson advanced following a hard-earned 6-3, 5-7, 10-7 triumph over Charles Joshua Kinaadman, while Encarnacion booked the other final ticket with a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Jason Lauron.

Tabotabo pulled away an easy 6-3, 6-0 win against Francis Edilbert Alcantara, while Necesario came up with a similar beating of Ralph Juliane.

Niño Siso grabbed another semifinal spot via the boys 16-under after clobbering Christian Paul Cabahug, 6-3,6-0.

The other semifinalists in the said class are Jayvee Canoy and Kurt Gerapusco. Canoy slammed Franklin Encarnacion,  6-2,  6-2,  while Gerapusco won by default over Jacob Lagman, who did not show up for unknown reasons.

Lagman though still has something to look forward too as he swept Angelo Ismael Villarante, 6-0, 6-0 to ease into the boys 14-under semis. He will tackle next Dan Eldred Cinco, who dumped Kim Ayuda, 6-2, 6-1.

The other boys 14-under semifinal match pits Fritz Satera against Kurt Garcia. Satera won against Alcantara, 6-1, 6-0, while Garcia outsmarted Kurt Gerapusco, 6-3, 2-6, 14-12.— Caecent No-ot Magsumbol
