Lagmans suffer contrasting fates

The Lagman siblings Jacob and Jessica Lagman suffered contrasting fates in the second day of the 13th Gullas Cup tennis tournament in separate venues yesterday.

Jacob, who drew a first round bye, handily beat Dan Eldred Cinco, 6-2, 6-0 in the boys 16-under class played at the Cebu Countryl Club.

With the win, Jacob booked a quaterfinal showdown with Charles Michael Cailing. The rest who advanced in their division were Princeton Gerapusco, Franklin Encarnacion, Ian Querubin, Jayvee Canoy, JP Aba, Christian Paul Cabahug, and Francis Adilbert Alcantara.

Cailing and Aba both won default, Gerapusco pulled off a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Angelo Ismael Villapante, while Encarnacion trounced Mark Chan, 6-2, 6-3.

Querubin won by a super tie-break against Joel Marlito Dela Torre, 2-6, 6-4, 10-5, Canoy pounded on John Salumag, 6-1, 6-1, Cabahug smothered Mark Bienes, 6-1, 6-2 and Alcantara clobbered Mark Gil Niño, 6-2, 6-1.

Still at CCC, Rafael Arpon rolled into the second round of the boys 12-under after posting a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over John Villamor. Spencer Sagrado also advanced with a  6-4, 6-3 whipping of Clyde Bienes, in the same way with Ralph Juliane following a 7-5, 6-1 disposition of Reunne Hibidnado.

Over at the Casino Español de Cebu tennis courts, Jessica Lagman, hurdled her opening assignment in the girls 16-under, but faltered at the hands of Lovelie Soquiño, 6-2, 6-3, in the 18-under category.

 Sallydine Siso, on the other hand, continued to show her might by dispatching Rosemarie Sanchez, 6-0, 6-0.

Vincee Sanchez made sure he won’t suffer the fate of her sister Rosemarie by bouncing back from a first-set debacle to fend off Arlene Marave, 1-6, 6-4, 10-4.

Jacqueline Salas grabbed a 6-4, 6-4 win against Cindy Gerapusco, while Sallydine’s younger sister, Sally Mae, won her first game in the girls 14-under at the expense of Glory Fate Boho, 6-1,6-1.

Hannah Espinosa, Ayn Magracia and Clarrisa Fuentes dumped their respecrive opponents to join Sally Mae in the second round.
