SWU, UV enter semis of San Remigio tourney

Cebu’s most decorated beach volleyball teams - Southwestern University and University of the Visayas - entered semifinal round of the 1st San Remigio Beach Volleyball Open at the San Remegio sand courts.

Newly-crowned Nestea Beach Volleyball national champions, Janelle Tabio and Florian Gutierrez topped Bracket A with a perfect 3-0 card. Tabio and Gutierrez beat Volley Gals of Marites Natad and Christine Rose Bohol 25-18. Earlier they beat the Atenians of Michelle Gemarino and Jovy Abellana at 25-7. In the opener, they won over the USPF tandem of Ericka Camille Verano and SAC awardee, Danika Gendrauli 25-21.

In Bracket B, the fancied University of the Visayas tandem of Jusabelle Brillo and Janez Igot were similarly impressive with a 3-0 card. Brillo and Igot beat Jeremie Montalvo and Juvie Glipo of the University of San Carlos 25-15, the XOXO team of April Tamayo and Irene Montesino 25-19, and Marissa Lagancia and Kenneth Garces of the Volleybelles 25-13.

Despite losing, USPF and Volleybelles qualified for the semis as well by finishing second their respective brackets.

In today’s semifinal pairings, SWU takes on the Volleybelles while UV and USPF tangles in the second match.

The champion in the tournament will pocket P5,000 while P3, 000 and P2, 000 will be given to the second and third placers, respectively.
