Tierro and Arcilla win Cebuana Lhuillier tennis
If there’s a number combination that Patrick John Tierro likes, then they are 6 and 4.
The 22-year-old scored a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Yannick Guba in the singles finals and then teamed up with Johnny Arcilla in beating Yannick Guba and Elbert Anasta in another 6-4, 6-4 score line for the doubles crown.
For his effort, Tierro pocketed the P40,000 championship purse in the singles and shared the P20,000 doubles pot with Arcilla in the 2008 Cebuana Lhuillier Men’s Open Tennis Championship yesterday at the Baseline tennis courts.
Tierro got to an early 3-0 lead over Guba in the singles finals but Guba was able to rally and make it 3-3. Tierro quickly got back into the match and won three of the next four games to pocket the first set 6-4.
In the second set, the tables were turned. Guba raced to a 4-1 lead only to allow Tierro to come back and level the count at 4-4. With momentum on his side, Tierro won the next two games.
In the doubles finals, Tierro and Arcilla had to dig deep into their experience to subdue the game Guba and Anasta in the first set. With Arcilla playing with a hamstring injury, Guba and Anasta tried to run down Arcilla and were able to tie the match at 4-4. Tierro and Arcilla, however, held service in the next game and broke their opponent’s in the next for a 6-4 victory.
In the second set, the duo clicked in all cylinders, took a 5-1 lead and closed out the match.
