Chester Enterprises ’82/83 banked on a sizzling third-quarter offensive show to squeak past VAG Trading ’94, 38-35, in a low-scoring game Thursday night in the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association’s 10th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup at the City Sports Club-Cebu Gym.
Stephen Tan almost singlehandedly carry Class ’82/83 to victory with 15 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Edwin Lim scored only nine but pulled down 10 caroms and dished out two assists as they improved to 3-2 to stay in the race for the Final Four that will earn twice-to-beat incentive in the quarterfinal round.Class ’82/83 had a sluggish start and trailed by five at halftime, 19-24, but the Chester Enterprises stalwarts suddenly turned red-hot in the third period where they scattered 15 markers while holding off Class ’94 to a measly four points to wrest the driver’s seat, 34-28.
Class ’94 regained the lead, 35-34, with two minutes lest in the contest, but Stephen Tan hit a field goal to put Class ’82/83 in front for good, 36-35. Edwin Lim and Resil Yu then sank one free throw each to wrap up the match.
Stanley Gaw and Ghetto Belnediza finished with eight points apiece as no player submitted double figures for Class ’94, which slipped to 3-4.
In the other game, Donald Anthony Ting fired 24 points and Dean Dy Teves added 20 as Henkel Philippines ’95 crushed Castrol ’96, 67-53, to raise its win-loss record to 8-1.
Ahead by only two at the bend, 31-29, Class ’95 breathe fire in the third period where it launched a fluid 19-9 rally to rip the game apart, 50-38, heading into the payoff period.
Class ’96 never recovered from there to asborb its third setback in eight starts. Drefuss Ang paced the Castrol-backed squad with 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals followed by Bryan Renejane with 10 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.
