Fil-Aussie tanker dreams big in Oz

The Filipino-Australian swimming sensation who made waves in the Land Down Under has three major ambitions in life.

First and foremost, the 10-year-old Hazel Son wants to become a member of the Australian national team in 2010, second to win an Olympic gold medal and third to make history as the youngest swimming champion in the world.

The daughter of former University of Cebu (UC) Webmaster power forward Harley Son swept three gold medals in the 2008 Swimming WA Sprint Championships held last March 8-9 at the Challenge Stadium in Perth, Australia.

Son, a top bet of the Aquajets Swimming Club under German coach Gerry Stachewicz, bagged three gilts in the 50-meter Long Course freestyle. She earned 10 points after clocking in 31.78 seconds.

A total of 45 tankers took part in the 10-years below  category.

Hazel, however, placed only fourth among 33 participants in the 50-meter LC backstroke with the time of 38.79 seconds. Hazel vowed to bounce back in the State Age Swimming Championships in early April. Her 12-year-old sister Harme is also a champion swimmer. (GGM)
