USC, USJ-R rule 2nd CESAFI beach volley

The University of San Carlos (USC) Spiking Warriors and the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) belles ruled the 2nd Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) Beach Volley, which culminated yesterday at the Inayagan Beach Resort in Naga City.

The USC tandem of Roderick Arenasa and Edward Carlo Tecson did not really expect to snatch the men’s division championship as they lost to the USJ-R side, 20-25, in the elimination round.

Fortunately for the Carolinians, James Ryan Rivera and Edward Ybañez of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) pulled off a 25-21 upset over USJ-R’s Ariel Carumba and Loujie Tipgos.

USC has earlier defeated USPF, 25-15, to create a three-way tie between them and USJ-R with similar 3-1 win-loss records.

To break the impasse, the quotient system was applied. USC posted the highest tie-break output to romp away with the title. USJ-R finished second followed by USPF.

Interestingly, it was Arenasa’s second straight crown in CESAFI beach volley. He teamed up with Neiljune Dayondon in steering USC to the tournament’s maiden championship last year.

USJ-R of coach Grace Antigua still has something to cheer about as it claimed the women’s tiara via a five-game sweep.

USJ-R’s Genie Sabas and Michelle Simbajon punctuated their unbeaten run with a 25-7 thrashing of the University of Cebu (UC).

Southwestern University (SWU) of coach Janeth Ponte took the second place honors with a 4-1 win-loss record. SWU’s Lorie Mae Layno and Jessa Satina capped their campaign with a 25-18 disposition of Cebu Doctors’ University (CDU).
