Corner Bakery/Petrogas ‘92 subdued VAG Trading ’94, 69-57, for its first win in the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association’s 10th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup at the City Sports Club-Cebu Gym.
Mitchel Diputado had a solid double-double show, finishing with 27 points on top of 13 rebounds as Class ’92 dealt Class ’94 its worst 0-2 start ever in the league’s nine-year history.
Diputado, Jorgen Kong and Ryan Ordes connived for 19 points in a 22-14 run in the second quarter that turned an early 15-18 deficit into a 37-32 lead for Class ’92 at halftime.
Class ’94 knotted the count at 49-all at the end of the third period, but Diputado completed his game-long brilliance by charting in 13 markers in a blistering 20-8 rally to seal their 12-point victory.
Flashy guard Richard Lanutan chipped in 13 points for Class ’92 followed by Kong with 12. Ordes added 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Stanley Gaw paced Class ’94 with 16 points, six rebounds, and three steals, while Anthony Chua chippined in 10 points, five rebounds, and two assists.
In the other game, Alwyn Ong fired 18 points to power Jepoy Sales 2001 to a 55-46 win over JV Bakeshop 2002.
Ong, who shot 5-of-8 from teh field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line, scored nine in the second period where Class 2001 outscored Class 2002, 17-11, to pad its lead to a dozen points at the break, 34-22. Class 2002 never recovered from there.
Thus, Class 2001 bettered its win-loss record to 2-3, while Class 2002 slipped to 1-3. David Chan paced Class 2002 with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals.
