5th Thirsty Football Festival opens with record entries

- Caecent No-ot Magsumbol -

A record field of 228 teams will see action as the 5th Thirsty Football Festival kicks off late this afternoon at the Cebu City Sport Center.

The 3-day festival-type football competition is the biggest of its kind outside of Metro Manila, with a hundred more entries this year as compared to last year.

Initial report listed 230 participating teams but two teams couldn’t make it due to financial constraints explained Charlie Pages, the man behind the football festival, during the press conference yesterday at Moon Cafe. Pages also said that they have to refuse some late entries because the schedule is already complete.

Visiting teams came from Tanjay, Dumaguete, Tacloban, Maasin, Masbate, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Bacolod, San Carlos City, Ormoc and Iligan. They will be vying for honors against a big bunch of school teams and local clubs in the city.

The competing teams will be spread in 14 divisions including Players 6, 8 and 10, boys and girls 14, 19, boys 12, 17, men’s open, ladies open, 36-above and 40-above class.

Scheduled to play today are the Players 8, 10, boys 12, girls 14, boys 17, men’s open and the 40-above.

The festival is not all football. Photo enthusiasts, both professional and amateurs will have the chance to win cash prizes in a photo contest that is a sidelight of the tournament.

Photographers who are working in print media must have their pictures published to qualify for the contest while those who are not media practitioners will have to submit at least 20 photos, in a CD, as entry.
