The right path for volleyball

The need for more volleyball coaches and trainers in Cebu is about to be addressed with the first of a series of trainings to be conducted by the Cebu Volleyball Association (CEVA).

I got word about the activity set to open tomorrow at the Capitol from Glenn Anthony O. Soco, president of the CEVA.

He said that the organization expects over a hundred to take part in this activity and the participants are from the various towns and cities around Cebu most especially the coaches of the teams in the GUV Cup.

Also set to take part will be education, SK and barangay officials, who have been sent invitations for the activity.

Nonna Catipay, our very active executive director of CEVA, said that the registration fee is pegged at P850 only and this already covers lunch for three days, two snacks per day, free flowing water and coffee, a copy of the 2006-2008 FIVB module, and a shirt.

She said that this is the first of three activities that will be conducted to address the need of elevating the standard of volleyball in Cebu.

The next two activities will be clinics for the players and a referees’ course so that there would be more accredited game officials to run tournaments around the province.

The whole program would culminate with the staging of the 4th GUV Cup later this year.

In sincerely wish that other sports leaders would also do something similar and not just limit their activities to giving out sports equipment and staging tournaments.

It’s a matter of setting the groundwork for better players in the future by ensuring that all requirements to attain such would be put in place.

The Sportswriters Association of Cebu (SAC) met over lunch at the Laguna Garden Café yesterday to select the teams and individuals, who will be honored in the 28th SAC-San Miguel Corporation All-Cebu Sports Awards.

To be honored in the awards ceremony tentatively set next month would be the top achievers of 2007.

The list of winners has not yet been finalized but some recipients of special and major awards will be announced in a few days.

Those who think they may qualify for awards can contact any member of the SAC.

By the way, the decision as to who gets an award is made by the group and not by the person nominating.  I am pointing this out because several years ago an angry coach, who promised his athletes that they would get awards from the SAC, confronted me about the matter.

Not even an individual member of the SAC can promise you an award since we all decide on it.

I don’t expect that to happen again though.
