USJ-R, SWU share lead in La Fortuna cagefest
The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJR) Jaguars stymied a late rally by the Salazar College-Salazar Institute of Technology (SC-SIT) and scored a 114-109 victory to share the lead with Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras in the ongoing La Fortuna Cup II basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

Luther Justiniani and Manny Gabas sank pressure packed freethrows late in the game to give USJ-R the cushion after SC-SIT came within 100-104 with a triple by Gilbert Violango, Jr., 46 seconds left in the game.
Justiniani finished the game with 23 points for the Jaguars while Bobby Hatague contributed 20 points for the team’s second victory.
Violango led the Skyblazers with 26 points after back-up point guard Jun Gabia needed three stitches to close a cut he suffered during the game. Benjie Calma also had a big night with 20 points.
Meanwhile, the SWU Cobras also chalked up their second straight victory, the other day, with a close 90-84 victory over the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors.
Peppery guard Eliud Poligrates, who sometimes drew the ire of Coach Dodie Miego for being too fancy, settled down in this game and scored 21 points for the Jaguars. His buddy, Eric Zanoria chipped in 19 points.
Clifford Maguate and Alfred Belande, former USPF Panthers, were a great help in steadying the Cobras’ offense that started to waiver in the face of a furious fourth quarter rally by USC led by Niño who finished with 16 markers.
The La Fortuna II caging is sponsored by Hotel Fortuna, La Fortuna Bakery, Pepsi Cola and Nature’s Spring.
