Lahug rules City Olympics

The Lahug District stamped its class in both the elementary and secondary divisions to rule the 17th Cebu City Olympics, which closed yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

This is the first time in many years that both titles were won by only one district.

Paref-Springdale’s victory in secondary football helped push Lahug to the title of the high school category with a total of 211 points.

Lahug District also ruled in the boys and girls’ volleyball event.

Abellana National School, which carries the banner of Unit XI settled for second place after losing to Springdale in football.  They had a total of 205 points.

The University of Cebu-powered Tejero District ended third with 201 after dominating the first three days of action.

The fourth to 11th placers in the secondary level were San   Nicolas (158), Pardo (151), Mabolo (120.5), Guadalupe (103.5), Zapatera (103), Labangon (46.5), Basak (28) and Central District with 13.5 points.

In the elementary level, Lahug District dislodged City Central from its throne with 179 points as against 174 points of the latter.

Lahug’s supremacy in swimming and the contributions of their shuttlecock artists, football players and volleybelles paved their way to victory.

Mabolo District landed third with 130.5 points while the rest of the top 10 cast are Basak (129.5), San Nicolas (104), Labangon (98), Guadalupe (84.5), Zapatera (82), Pardo (78), and Tejero with 27.5.Unlike in the basic levels, the tertiary division was decided based on medal tally with the University of Cebu sealing its bid with 38 golds, 27 silvers and 15 bronzes.

Majority of UC’s medal haul came from athletics with and 18-15-7 tally while its swimmers contributed 13-4-5.

UC also got two golds from karatedo, plus a gold each in chess, table tennis and volleyball.

The Cebu State College of Science and Technology is at far second with 16-18-19 and Southwestern University ended third with 10-7-12 while the fifth to 10th placers were the University of San Carlos (5-17-9), Cebu Normal University (4-5-6), University of San Jose-Recoletos (4-0-1), University of Southern Philippines (1-1-0), University of the Philippines (1-1-0), Don Bosco College (1-0-1) and Salazar College of Science Institute and Technology with a gold through its basketball team. — Caecent No-ot Magsumbol
