The MS Motosuit-Unity Basketball Club (UBC) of sports patron Lou Ornopia breathe hell, fire and brimstone from start to finish to etch a record-busting 108-49 victory over the Cebu Sports Media Association (CSMA) and stay undefeated in the 1st MP Cup Invitational over the weekend at the USC-Main Gym.
MS Motosuit-UBC’s 59-point cakewalk is a new league record, eclipsing by just two points the previous mark set by the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association (CECABA) in its 122-65 demolition also of CSMA.
All 13 players fielded in by UBC scored, six of them in double figures led by Delfin Bontuyan with 18 points.
Nestor Lapiña added 14 points, Lopesino Bontia 13, and Geryl Bukiron 11, while Rey Gonzaga and Donald Diaz pitched in 11 markers apiece as the MS Motosuit-backed squad earned a share of Bracket A lead with RWS Stable/AJL Surplus with identical 4-0 slates.
The lopsided outcome was already evident when MS Motosuit-UBC raced to a sizzling 33-9 start. Then, UBC outscored CSMA in the second period, 29-11, before closing the one-sided bout with a knocking 46-27 blow.
Manny Villaruel had 21 points followed by Efren Lonzon with 12 for CSMA, which fought with only five players as it crashed to its fifth straight defeat in as many starts.
In the other game, M. Lhuillier-San Carlos Boys High School Alumni Basketball Association (SCBHABA) coasted to its fourth consecutive win after rolling past Crunchicken-Jaycees Basketball Association (JBA), 70-62.
Virgil “Bing” Pua scattered a season-high 21 points, Jonathan Diaz added 14 and bull-strong center Dindo Sausa cashed in 11 markers as SCBHABA joined Samsung-Punta Princesa Sports Association (PPSA) on top the Bracket B leader board with similar 4-0 win-loss cards.
SCBHABA trailed by five at halftime, 36-31, but rode on a strong endgame finish to turn back the gritty JBA. Overall in the final half, SCBHABA outscored JBA, 39-26.
Chito Hernandez finished with 16 points, while Benedict Chua and Ed Latonio chipped in 14 and 11 markers, respectively, for JBA, which suffered its second loss in three games.
