Comarejos and Lopez dominate Liloan chessfest

Brandon Comarejos and Danny Lopez topped their respective divisions in the Sitio Lourdes Poblacion, Liloan Chess Tournament last Saturday.

Comarejos bested Harold Pones in the final round to clinch the kiddies title via five-game sweep, while Lopez hurdled his final assignment against Edgar Macatos to clinch the seniors crown with a perfect 5.0 points.

Three players figured in a three-way tie in the kiddies division with similar four points, but Pones got the second place honors due to a superior tie-break output applying the Bucholz system.

Efren Tonolite, who edged out Rachel Suson, settled for third followed by Kaye Ervin Villaester, who ended his campaign by beating Vergel Quirol.

In the seniors class, Evan Canaveral subdued Joselito Hortezano in the last round and that was all he needed to claim the second place trophy with 4.0 points. Vidal Villamor and Vincent de la Torre both ended up with 3.5 points, but Villamor took the third place courtesy of a higher tie-breaker.

The champion in both categories pocketed P500, while the second and third got P300 and P200, respectively. The results were furnished to The Freeman via e-mail by tournament arbiter Tony Cabibil. — EBV
