2007 UNI-GAMES: USJ-R volleybelles make it 3-0

The M. Lhuillier Sports Development Foundation (MLSDF)-sponsored University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) sustained its sizzling run with a three-set whacking of Iloilo Doctors’ College in volleyball event of the 2007 National University Games (Uni-Games) at the University of St. La Salle-Bacolod Gym.

Armed with a clean 3-0 slate, the MLSDF/USJ-R belles of Cebu Sports Hall of Famer coach Grace Antigua will clinch the top spot in Bracket B if they get past College of St. Benilde in their final elimination round assignment today.

If victorious, the reigning back-to-back champion in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc (CESAFI) women’s volleyball will face next the second seed in Bracket A for a semifinal berth.

Just like in their previous games, the Josenians peppered the IDC mainstays  with relentless attacks, solid defensive stops and smart drop shots. They hammered out a 25-21, 25-15 victory in the first two sets, before finishing off the Ilongo spikers, 25-14.

USJ-R’s previous victims were St. Louis University of Baguio and Silliman University of Dumaguete also in three sets, thanks to the inspired plays of Jullett Mae Marikit, Genie Sabas, Aina Laroga, and Michelle Simbajon.

In the men’s division, the University of San Carlos (USC) Spiking Warriors were not as lucky as they stumbled anew, this time against the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Tigers, 15-25, 17-25, 17-25.
