Lancers go for clincher tonight
The formidable University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers shoot for their seventh straight CESAFI collegiate basketball crown tonight when they take on the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors in Game 4 of their best-of-five finals series at the Cebu Coliseum.

Before the crucial game, secondary champion UV Baby Lancers, women’s title-holder USC Lady Warriors and their runners-up will receive their trophies in a simple awarding ceremony. Also, the MVPs for both college and high school will be feted together with the Mythical Five members.
UV’s main weapon in the last two games has been their torrid outside shooting. The company of Von Harry Lanete, Chris Victor Diputado, Ritchum Dennison, Michael Luga and Harlow Chad Villanil were connecting from the three-point region with impeccable accuracy.
Unless the Warriors can stop UV’s dreaded long-range bombers, they can kiss their season goodbye.
The Warriors have been in a fix the last two games. They tried to extend their defense to cover the shooters of UV but then when they do, UV’s guards were quick to dish off the ball to their slotmen in the shaded area.
6-foot-11 Fil-Am giant Gregory Fuentes Slaughter and other big men Rino Berame and Ariel Mepaña have yet to dominate the scoring, but they offer an option if UV’s outside gunners conk out.
While UV’s shooters are clicking, USC’s snipers are clattering. USC has been relying heavily on its feared one-two punch in Enrico Llanto and Niño Ramirez. When they are off, it rubs to other players.
Thus, the Warriors should also draw support from the likes of Ryan Carlo Padayao, Sam Jordan Hermosa, Giovanni Padillo, Norman Paul Joven and Harvey Lazalita if they want to live and fight for another day.
Another key to USC victory is to throw up a tenacious defense just like what it did in its Game 1 upset of UV.
