After the cake, the icing

FULL POINT - Nimrod Nl Quinines -

After last Sunday’s epic battle with the Ateneo Blue Eagles, the De La Salle Green Archers fans seem to have mellowed despite the fact that the team has advanced to the final against the University of the East.

Was the season over last Sunday for La Salle?  Not yet, but that was really what mattered most for the Green Archers that have put one over archrival Ateneo once again.

Last Thursday, I dropped by Hola España to check out how the Cebu-based La Sallians were doing as they watched game 1 of the championship series.

The place wasn’t that packed, but the Animo spirit along with the lechon from Abon Cimafranca and the green shirts that most of those gathered wore showed that the season is far from over and now that La Salle has the cake (beating Ateneo) they need the UAAP title as icing.

Game 1 has been won by the Green Archers by the skin of their teeth and Game 2 is set tomorrow.  I hope La Salle would win it all, but UE is no easy team to beat.

I believe there is another viewing party at Hola España tomorrow organized by Jun Dizon and they expect more Green Archers to be there to cheer for the team.

Go La Salle!

The Don Bosco Boys Home Alumni are looking for ways to become a positive influence on the current wards based in sitio Baca, barangay Apas.

I had a rather lengthy conversation with coach Robert ‘Kidd’ Nicart earlier this week and he told me that among their projects is a futsal (indoor football) tournament starting next weekend at the Don Bosco Technology Center.

They have competitions in the men and women’s divisions and are still looking for more teams to participate.

Coach Kidd said that the proceeds of this project will go to DBBH.

More than contributing materially, what makes this effort of the former wards of DBBH is that they can show to the young boys that they too can make it if they persevere.

I’ve known Kidd since his younger days and also other DBBH players like Jack-Jack Abdullah, Rocky Garciano and many more whose games I used to cover before football was this big in Cebu.

I call on those who have a soft heart for football to support their event and help the DBBH too.

Our contributions need not all be financial.  It could be by fielding a team, or maybe providing materials that they might need for the event or simply our moral support.

This would also be a perfect time to see futsal up close and how we can develop the sport further in this part of the world.

Many of the top football stars now once played futsal.
