Southwoods leads WGAP tourney

Manila Southwoods showed the seriousness of its bid to unseat defending champion Del Monte at the start of the Women’s Golf Association of the Philippines (WGAP) Luzvimin Golf Invitational at the Cebu Country Club yesterday.

Regine de Guzman fired the day’s best round of even-par 54 points in the Molave points system to lead Manila Southwoods yesterday.  The Cavite-based team scored a total of 193 points in the Diamond division of the six-to-play, four-to-count format.

Also counting for the team total were Lora Roberto with 49, Carmelette Villaroman with 48, and Beachie Abiera with 42. 

Del Monte is two points back with 191 points behind the 53 of Lovelyn Guioguio, 48 of Marian Woo, 46 of Kristine Leonen, and 44 of Eva Miñoza.

Host Cebu Country Club is at third spot with 180 points courtesy of Stephanie Olea 50, Kathleen Uy 48, Hannah Wong 43, and Ada Martinez 39.  Camp Aguinaldo is 4th with 175 followed by Forest Hills with 158, John Hay 144, and Mactan Island Golf Club with 90.

Ruby Division

A three-way battle for the title looms in this second-ranked category with only two points separating the top three teams.

Negros leads the field after yesterday’s action with 158 points courtesy of Aileen Chua (46), Gabby Monfort (39), Maite Lustre (38), and Queenie Bautista (35).

Sta. Elena made 157 from Rio Co (46), Nancy Ortiga (43), Fely Lopez (35), and either of the 33s submitted by Angie Co and Tami Leung.

Pamplona made 156 points from Gigi Frokjear (43), Farah de Asis (40), Amanda Vicente (38), and Ana Montenegro (35).

Cebu’s Alta Vista is at sixth spot with 138 points.  Counting for the team were Gigi Ash and Michelle Lee with 40 points apiece, Annie Au with 30 and either of the 28s of Tessa Ozoa and Rosita Uy.

Pearl Division

Alabang posted a three-point lead in this third-ranked category after Wack-Wack was penalized two points for an infraction.

Alabang made 138 courtesy of Carol Nielsen (39), Videlyn Torralba (39), Gina Tuason (32), and Olive Pizarro (28).

Wack-Wack is at second with 135 from Claudette Santiago (43), Uy So Han (34), Polly Aquino (31), and Mai Cu (29).

Club Filipino Incorporada de Cebu is at third with 132 points from Lucille Colina (39), Jeanette Chiu (33), Eva Hino (30), and Remy Perez (30).
