Y101 Corporate Cup

The past two days have been very contrasting.  After playing in wet weather conditions last Thursday the sun was up yesterday and it seems that the scores also improve drastically in the 1st Y101 Corporate Cup.

The final results are not yet in as of this writing, but for sure, you’ll see them a few column inches away from this column.

The tournament is the first attempt of radio station Y101-FM to go into golf organizing and from the way things have gone, it seems that it’s an excellent start.

This of course means that there will be a 2nd, 3rd, and so on for the Y101 Corporate Cup.

The hardest part in organizing a golf tournament or any sporting event for that matter is getting the sponsors to commit and give their share to make it possible.

The Y101 Corporate Cup luckily had Martha Tuason backed by her husband Joseph Stevens getting various sponsors from Cebu, Manila and other parts of the country to contribute to the success of the event.

Many of the backers of the event were first time sponsors of golf tournaments in Cebu and many of them were first time sponsors of anything here in the Queen City of the South.

This early, there is already a lot of talk about doing this tournament in both Cebu Country Club and Alta Vista Golf and Country Club next year.

That means the number of entries will also double and I’m sure the key members of both clubs would be willing to extend their support to the tournament.

There’s one thing about the golfers in Cebu that makes it hard to organize tournaments – they’re hard to please, but then they’re also a great bunch to be with.

Talking about great friends, after a long absence from tournaments held at the Cebu Country Club, it surely felt like coming back to an old familiar place.

I played both rounds of the tournament with my compadre Oly Dychangco, which made it even more fun knowing that when you’re with friends the laughter and the banter are authentic and not measured.

I guess, more than drawing this many participants, the Y101 Corporate Cup has been successful in bringing together the top business executives of Cebu and other parts of the country for two days of fun.

After the tournament, there are also the raffle prizes that would give the players a reason to come back again to play.  Yes, that’s right, if not for the raffles there’d be only a few participants in the events.

Hehehe…

After a round of golf, my friend Johnny Siao suggests a visit to Spa at Cebu.

It’s just a few minutes away from Cebu Country Club says Johnny and is very easy to spot on the left side when you’re heading inside the Maria Luisa Road.

MILESTONE: Last night’s party was not only the awards ceremony of the Y101 Corporate Cup, but also some sort of a birthday celebration for June Rabin, the station manager.

All the best to you always my friend, not just on this month of June, but all year round!
