Worldwide Steel turned to its porous defense in the payoff period to shackle Global Carrier, 56-48, in the 2007 Winners League basketball tournament on Thursday at the City Sports Club-Cebu gym.
Worldwide Steel trailed by four at the end of the third period, 38-42, but stepped up its defense in the fourth to force Global into a spate of costly errors. Then, Worldwide Steel converted garbage into gold to turn the tide of the match in its favor using an 18-6 run in the windup.
Duane Lim had 14 points and Kent Ong added 13 as Worldwide Steel firmed up its grip of the second place with a 6-2 win-loss record.
Karl Salvador and Edmund Gaisano churned out 25 points combined for Global carrier, which suffered its sixth loss against only one win.
In the other game, Sentinel Security Agency escaped past JV Shop N Shop, 84-81, for its second victory in seven games.
Chris Sta. Maria sparkled with 31 points for Sentinel, while Gilbert Gajudo and Adolfo added 28 and 21 markers, respectively.
Samsam Gullas also finished with 31 points followed by Mark Hing with 14 for JV Shop, which fell to 2-5.
