Davao runners shock Cebu bets

Runners from Davao City stunned hometown bets yesterday to rule the First Cebu City ASEAN 10-kilometer Fun Run which started and ended in front of the Cebu Capitol building.

National champion Stella Diaz-Mamac and the fast rising Angelito Sibayan conquered the field to win the premier women and men's open titles.

Diaz-Mamac clocked 39 minutes and 29.52 seconds to score a victory over Cebu's Leiszl Lumindas-Getaruelas, who timed 40:53.83.

The two were trailed by Mary Rose Arman of University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) for in 42:01.76, Mary Jane Beboso at fourth in 42:57.05, Sheena Gacayan of University of Cebu for fifth in 43:21.89, Merlita Arias (44:14.14), Madelyn Carter (44:29.80), Joery Lee (44:59.67), Gina Adan (47:28.04) and Camela Luterte (47:35.23).

In the men's open, Sibayan sprinted his way to the finishing line, leaving behind Mendel Lopez of USPF, who lead most of the way, to take the championship trophy.

Sibayan finished the race in 32 minutes and 37.81 seconds while Lopez settled for second in 32:43.60.

Joel Delposo of Badian National High School came in third in 33:25.70 while his elder brother Eugene, the Milo Cebu-Elimination champion was fourth in 33:34.78.

Another early favorite, Joseph Penales of Bohol wound up fifth in 33:17.03.

The sixth to 10th placers in the men's open were Dionesio Belmonte of Ormoc (34:40.47), Adonis Singson (34:43.91), Jeffrey Sotto (34:46.45), Miljune Luterte (34:57.52) and last year's Milo-Cebu first runner-up John Philip Dueñas of Danao City (35:10.08).

In the executive class, Enrique Mangas (41:21.93) outsmarted Garry Garcia (41:46.72) as Froilan Roble settled third in 45:58.64.

The top 10 finishers are Jefrey Amboang (46:32.63), Leony Anre Palco (46:42.42), Jesus Baculi, Jr. (47:06.57), Emmanuel Lopez (47:08.18), Armando Morales (47:21.61), Dr. Potenciano "Yong" Larrazabal (47:45.69) and Meleno Ancit in 49:37.21.

In the master's A class, Romeo Catulong showed his old form to win the no.1 spot in 35:52.12.

Behind Catulong were Maxjun Espinosa in 36:29.13 and Jaime Manayaga at third place in 37:09.15.

In the master's B, it was Joaquin Laurente who topped in 40:34.10 while Paulino Obra was second in 45:18.84 and Wilfredo Ignacio ended third in 45:45.26 in the event organized by the Cebu City Sports Commission and officiated by the Sports and Fitness Enthusiasts (SAFE) group of Cebu.
