The entire crew of the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers who placed second in the last Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, inc. (CESAFI) season bannered by Edrian Lao, Phil Mercader and Christian Camay will join the Nike Elite Camp tryouts here on January 28 at the Sacred Heart School-Jesuits (SHS) gym along Gen. Maxilom ave., this city.
Baby Lancers coach Delfin Pepito Jr. said all his players are not only qualified for the tryouts but they all also potential players.
He said that team manager Gerard Anthony "Didi" Gullas wanted all the players to join the tryouts to impress the organizers headed by coach Eric Altamirano.
By sending all their players, UV will have the most participants to the tryouts aimed at discovering the best high school players in the country to be trained for one week at the Nike Elite Camp in Mamplasan, Laguna from March 30 to April 4 with an all-expenses paid trip and free board and lodging.
At the end of the training camp, the best 24 participants will be divided into two teams after, which they play in the All-Star game.
As bonus, the coaches of those qualified players will be also sent to Laguna to accompany their players and will enjoy the same privilege. They will also be provided Nike outfits.
Nike Elite Camp coordinator coach Ramel Rasmo said that there will be a separate camp for coaches and negotiations are underway for some American coaches to help in conducting the coaching seminar.
Retired NBA player David Wood will assist Altamirano and coach Ato Badolato in running the camp, an affiliate of the International Basketball Academy (IBA) headed by Fil-Am player Alex Compton who stayed here in the Philippines since the MBA days.
Altamirano said it would be much better if all juniors coaches in Cebu will recommend their players for the tryouts because they are expecting that many Cebuano players will be discovered considering Cebu is the Mecca of basketball in the south.
The schools joining the tryouts are CESAFI high school champion UC, UV, USC, USP-F, Sacred Heart and Don Bosco.
The deadline for the submission of the lists of players will be on January 10, 2007.
A tryouts in Bacolod will be held earlier on January 21.
