Cebu to host Yonex-Sunrise badminton on January 26-28

The Queen City of the South, Cebu will be hosting the Yonex-Sunrise Regional Championships, The Freeman learned from RP team head coach Errol C. Chan and Sunrise & Co. country manager Mary Elizabeth Torres in a press conference held Tuesday at the Cervantes Room of Casino Español de Cebu.

The tournament will be held on January 26-28, 2007 at the PortSide Badminton Plaza, which is owned by Elenita de Manuel.

The competition started last December 2 and 3 in Pampanga, attracting close to 400 participants.

"There will be a registration fee of P850 and upon registration, the players will be given Yonex shirts and they will undergo leveling," said Chan.

The players are categorized into different levels namely A, B, C, D and E, but level F will be added depending on the number of participants.

For the youngsters, there will be the Junior 16 and under division with boys doubles, girls doubles and mixed doubles.

The winners will receive a Yonex badminton racket, Yonex cap and t-shirt and a gold medal. Yonex AS2 shuttlecocks will be used during the games and Yonex badminton net.

Participants from Ilo-ilo, Capiz, Bacolod, Leyte and Roxas City will be coming also here in the Cebu tournament and Cokaliong, Rubli, Sulpicio and Palacio Shipping Lines are giving the participants 20% fare discount in coming here in Cebu.

According to Chan, the event will be played every month in 18 different regions of the country. This January will be in Cebu and the other games will be held in General Santos, Davao, Butuan and Cagayan de Oro, among others.
