La Salle golfers

FULL POINT - FULL POINT By Nimrod Quiñones -
With exactly three weeks to go before the La Salle-Ateneo golf Tournament at the Cebu Country Club, I'm still waiting for word from other golfing La Sallites or La Sallians (whichever suits you fine) to bare their intentions to play.

I'm very sure Balamban Councilor Dave Karamihan is very much willing to play even if his score might affect his chances of re-election, but he's playing for the sake of La Salle.

I wish the other golfing players of La Salle would be as motivated as Dave, who is not only a fellow alumnus of UP Cebu High School, but also another son of Atlas Foundry in Toledo City where our fathers used to work for.

To date, I have a few names already confirmed for the tournament to carry the colors of La Salle like Jojo Nazareno, who was among the earliest to signify. Dr. Rey Dira has also expressed his willingness and so has Toto Parco of GMC and my favorite orthopedic doctor Tony San Juan.

Our president Dondi Joseph, who is shuttling between Cebu and various points around the world, is also honing his skills not only in archery, but also in golf in preparation for the featured match of the tournament - the battle of the presidents.

Another Councilor, Herman 'Nino' Bascon of San Remigio is also actively recruiting players for the La Salle team.

Let's us know ASAP. The bigger task however is beating the Ateneo team, which has ruled the last three editions of the tournament.

We better stick to other sports guys.

I haven't been to an awards ceremony of a golf tournament for a long time, but last Friday I had to sneak out of the office to witness the closing rites of the Cardinal Vidal Jubilee Cup at the Cebu Country Club.

It felt like I wasn't attending a golf awards ceremony since the people seemed very composed.

They must have been awed at the presence of Cardinal Vidal, whose charities were the beneficiaries of the tournament.

In his brief speech, the Cardinal thanked the players for sharing their blessings and at the same time encouraged them to continue being giving people on a daily basis.

I believe giving doesn't have to be handing dole outs, but more about being kind to other people and offering a helping hand when you can.

Douglas LuYm, president of the Cebu Country Club, said it right in his welcome remarks. He said that while many people are trying really hard to be close to all sorts of false gods, it is best to be near people like the dear cardinal, who will help lead us to the real heaven.

I missed a special dinner hosted by my good friend Rolando Alberto the other night to celebrate his first hole-in-one in 20 years of playing golf.

Lando aced hole No. 13 of Alta Vista Golf and Country Club the other week.

What makes him one of my special friends from the golfing circle is the fact that he was among the people who initiated me into the game and joined me in my first round at the Iloilo Golf and Country Club over 11 years ago.

Work kept me holed in the office the whole night.

Congratulations Lando and may you score another ace or even more. I'll join the celebrations by then I promise.
