The University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors stunned favorite University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 1-0, to claim the 2006 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) tertiary men's football title yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.
Thanks to the heroic acts of Pomposo Atillo, who delivered the lone goal and the winning shot for the Warriors.
The first half of the final tussle ended without any score for both squads.
But in the second half, Atillo made one bold move, taking a chip shot to the left corner off a one-on-one situation with the goalie and made the lone goal in the 83rd minute.
In the battle for third place, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation dumped the University of the Visayas Lancers, 2-1 to settle for bronze medal.
The kicking Lancers actually logged the first goal through the efforts of Jordan Diao in the 17th minute but USPF's Prudencio Tenebro retaliated with a stab in the 24th minute to tie the game, 1-all.
With a tie score in the final half, USPF found the strength to fight better and succeeded with Michael Diano sealing the win in the 53rd minute of the game.
