Football festivals galore

Congratulations to the San Roque Football Club for a successful event last weekend at the San Roque Parish field in Subangdaku, Mandaue City.

I know how difficult it is to organize a football festival and you guys did a pretty neat job despite the short notice.

There were of course the usual problems about officiating, but then I do not fault the organizers for this, but rather would like to encourage the Cebu Football Association (CebuFA) to continue its effort to enhance the skills of the referees.

This weekend, the Cebu football community will once again gather for the Mizuno Football Festival at the Sacred Heart School-Jesuit field inside the Cebu Business Park.

Most of the younger age groups will be playing on Saturday while the others, including the 36-above class, which I belong to will play on Sunday.

Another interesting development that I saw last Sunday is the increasing number of teams in the age group where I play.

The PAREF-Dads United led by my good friend and Cebu City football sports director Ricky Dakay, is a welcome addition to the growing list.

Ricky is encouraging other PTAs to also organize their own teams and I hope the parents of other schools would also catch the fever soon.

A few years ago, we organized the Dads United Football Club composed of parents from Sacred Heart School-Jesuit to play during the school's family day and sports festival against the teachers.

Some of us from that team have decided to broaden our horizons by joining others teams particularly the Queen City United Football Club.

I did receive a letter from the Don Bosco Technology PTCA asking the parents about their preferred sports and I hope this would be the start of the organization of a team of parents from the school.

Last Saturday, I wrote about how families can bond through participation in sports and I believe that this is one of the best examples of such.

The moms used to be around only to cheer for their kids, now they are there for their husbands too.

It was just too bad that I could not finish last Sunday's event after I got knocked out in an accidental collision during the elimination round, but was told by my buddy Vince Nery that our team, Queen City-B, still managed to finish second to our team A.

We're hoping to a better finish on Sunday. See you all at the football field guys!
