The unpredictable Enrico Espinosa charted a season-high 30 points to power Punta Princesa Sports Association (PPSA)-I Cooler Marketing to a stunning 91-85 upset over Insular Life in the 2006 Executives Cup basketball tournament last Sunday at the City Sports Club-Cebu gym.
In the other game, Team Barkada booted out Sacred Heart Alumni Basketball Association (SHABA)-Cebu Home Builders via a 75-66 decision.
PPSA played without its top hitman Esteban Cesar Ortega, but Espinosa came out of his shell to flash one of the most surprising performances in the league this season.
Aside from bombarding six triples and hitting 6-of-8 from the 2-point field goal, Espinosa hauled 13 rebounds and issued six assists that spelled big difference as PPSA ended up its elimination round campaign with an even 5-5 slate.
Espinosa was heavily backed up by Ceferino Arellano with 18 points, six rebounds and six assists. Ric Jason Hernandez added 16 points, 10 caroms, four steals and three assists followed by Vicente Villar Jnr with 15 markers.
PPSA trailed by three after the first period, 19-22, but countered with a 28-18 spurt in the next quarter to grab the lead for good at halftime, 47-42.
Insular Life, which was without scoring machine Aikan Cabañero, was led by Joseph de Guzman with 28 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.
Ray Eduave and Rodolfo Romanos combined for 32 points,13 rebounds, and 13 assists for Insular Life, which tasted its only second defeat in nine games.
Later, Barkada missed the services of Pablo Yu and Giovanni Mante but had little trouble in cruising past SHABA to improve its win-loss record to 7-2.
Danny Lim sparkled with 28 points, seven rebounds and five assists, even as three others cashed in double figures for Insular Life, which dominated SHABA from start to finish.
Edgar de la Calzada chipped in 14 points for Barkada, while Reynold Zamora and Andrew Borres donated 12 and 10, respectively.
Theogene Lim finished with 27 points and Frederick Tan added 17 markers and 14 rebounds but fell short-handed as SHABA failed to make it to the playoffs with only two wins in 10 games.
It was rather a surprising exit for SHABA as it fielded in a stronger lineup compared to the past two years.
