Club Monday-Gatorade and Punta Princesa Sports Association (PPSA)-I Cooler Marketing pulled of contrasting victories in the 2006 Executives Cup basketball tournament last Sunday at the City Sports Club Cebu gym.
Club Monday weathered a furious endgame assault by Springdale PTA-Pepsi Max to grind through a 76-72 win, while PPSA Selection clobbered the listless City Sports Club-Sirlitz/Skylark from start to finish to come up with an 84-68 blowout.
Demosthenes Alfeche had 21 points and five rebounds, while Andres Seno Jnr added 20 markers, six rebounds and two steals on a 10-of-21 shooting from the field, while Demosthenes Alfeche added 21 markers as Club Monday bettered its win-loss record to 3-2.
Club Monday took only a four-point lead at halftime, 38-34, but padded it to a double digit, 57-47, entering the final canto.
Behind the hot hands of Peter Sta. Maria and Edwin Mercado, Springdale rallied by in the closing minutes of the game, 25-19, but time was not on its side.
P. Sta. Maria topped Springdale with 19 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and two steals followed by Mercado with 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Allan Adolfo added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Chris Sta. Maria had 12 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists, but their effort went to waste as Springdale suffered its third loss in four starts.
Later, Esteban Cesar Ortega sowed terror with season-highs 27 points and 15 rebounds, Ceferino Arellano posted 20 points, four rebounds and three steals, while Alfred Lim chipped in 19 points and 15 rebounds as PPSA improved to 2-3.
Ric Jason Hernandez contributed 12 points for PPSA, which staged a devastating 27-17 run in the windup to deal City Sports Club a frustrating 16-point demolition.
Gilbert Gajudo submitted solid numbers of 25 points, 12 rebounds, six steals and three assists, but got only help from Alex Yeo with 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists as City Sports Club plunged to its fifth straight defeat in as many games.
