Guardo cycling competition reels off today

The 2006 Guardo Xtreme Road and Mountainbike Challenge unfold this morning at the Paseo San Ramon grounds in Banawa.

Former Cebu City Sports Commission chairman Jonathan Guardo, a lover of mountainbike, will fire off the starting gun.

Hundreds of cyclists are expected to show-up today for the first leg including members of the national squad.

National team members Frederick Feliciano and March McQuin Aleonar are the top mountainbiker in the list as local bet Niño Surban eyes to give them a tough time.

Feliciano and Aleonar came to Cebu for the final regional elimination of the first Philippine Mountainbike Pro Tour, and to make their trip more worthwhile they joined the event.

Aside from the mountainbike event, there's also a racer competition.

The battle will be starting at the Paseo San Ramon and will go straight to Jollibee-Guadalupe across Banawa market before taking the Englis and V. Rama Streets and turn right to Happy Valley Road then go straight to Salvador Extension then back to Paseo San Ramon for the finish.

Pedal-pushers will be divided into different classes both in the mountainbike and racer event.

After today's action, riders will go for the second leg next Sunday with Salvador Extension near Cebu City Science High School as the start and finish line.

Cash prizes, trophies and medals will be awarded to the winners of the two-leg action plus gift items from Rudy Project Eyewear.

The two-part series organized by Guardo Sports is supported by Rudy Project Eyewear, Powerade, Hero, Safety First, Sulpicio Lines, Holiday Plaza, Gastripac and Oceanjet.
