The Z Cup

Think before you talk.

Here's something I got from my high school e-mail group. It's a testimony that I'd like to quote before I open today's piece:

I was at the golf store comparing different kinds of golf balls.

I was unhappy with the women's type I had been using.

After browsing for several minutes, I was approached by one of the good-looking gentlemen, who work at the store. He asked if he could help me.

Without thinking, I looked at him and said, 'I think I like playing with men's balls.'

To the non-golfer or to those who play the game, but never bothered to learn some nitty-gritty, women's balls are softer in terms of compression.

But this column is not about balls, well not totally not about balls since it is about golf and a worthwhile tournament that the Zonta Club is organizing - the Z Cup.

Three members of the Zonta Club have already gotten in touch with me about the tournament, which is set on April 5 and 6 at the Cebu Country Club.

First, it was Tita Tina Ebrada, one of my all-time favorite lady golfers and also my Ninang, who called me up to inform me about the coming event.

Then a few days later Marilou Cañizares sent me a facsimile message and then just yesterday morning, Baby Schaap gave me a call asking for assistance in telling the Cebu golf community about the event.

How can you say no to women when they ask you to help? I could not and I'm sure the many male golfers out there could not also say no when the Zonta Club members hold the tournament for the benefit of various projects.

I remember a few years ago when they first held the tournament, it was for the benefit of the Pink Room, which was yet to be constructed, if I remember it right, inside the Don Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center compound.

I still have to ask the ladies to give me more details about the event like the tournament format and registration fees, but I'd like to ask you to please block off your schedules this early.

The Z Cup is an event that is definitely worthy of our support.

If you are so eager to sign up, I suggest you contact any of the Zonta Club members and they'll be happy to tell you where to register.

I'll also keep you posted.

A fellow parent asked us this question recently. "Do I send my 12-year old son to the same training program this summer even if he had done so last year?"

I believe this is a question that hounds the minds of many parents. We probably want our kids to explore and learn other sports. My son has been going to football training every school break for the past five years and this year he wants to train again in the same sport.

Although I have been encouraging him to try others, but not exactly leaving his favorite sport, he kind of prefers playing football than doing something else.

If you child asks you to allow him to train again in the same sport that he took up last year, then he probably enjoyed what he did and wants to learn more, so don't stop him.

What is important is that you see the improvement in his skills. Supporting his decision might help your child reach the goals that he has set for himself.

I do not however discourage parents from letting their kids try other sports for variety and probably cross-training. It would be good for them to know more than one sport.
