Lapu-Lapu stuns Mandaue to pace GUV Cup semifinals

-
Lapu-Lapu City won all of its assignments to pace the 1st Governor Garcia Volleyball Unity Cup semifinal round yesterday at the Mandaue Sports and Cultural Complex.

The Lapu-Lapu City volleybelles, who finished as runner-up in cluster six, were simply overpowering as they overwhelmed their respective opponents.

Backed by a solid rooster from different varsity players of University of Southern Philippines and Southwestern University, stalwarts from Lapu-Lapu bucked a 15-25 first set loss in the opening match to dominate over Minglanilla, 25-16, 26-24, 25-21.

Michelle Simbajon of University of San Jose-Recoletos, who is also an Asian Girls Volleyball Championship campaigner, was the prominent figure in the Lapu-Lapu squad as she dished out important volleys to buoy her team in stunning erstwhile tormentor Mandaue City, who denied them of the championship during their cluster meeting.

Lapu-Lapu stunned Mandaue City in straight sets, 25-23, 25-23, 25-19.

The semifinal battles continues today with the top two teams fighting for the title and the P100,000 prize in the tournament organized by Cebu Volleyball Association. - Sona Mae V. Povadora
