Mandaue sweeps two assignments

Mandaue City capitalized its home court advantage to win of its assignments yesterday in the qualifying round of the 1st Governor Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup at the Mandaue Sports and Cultural Center.

With University of the Visayas' Janez Igot in the frontline, Mandaue City put up a rousing start with a convincing 25-10, 25-11 victory over Badian.

Reina Cielo Berdana dished out three ace service while former University of San Jose-Recoletos varsity Arlene Cabaltera added another spark for Mandaue in disposing Sogod in its second match, 25-15, 25-9.

Cluster VI champion Mandaue City, although already assured of a seat in the semifinals, leads bracket I with an immaculate 2-0 card and will face against the equally tough Toledo City.

Toledo, on the other hand, defeated Sogod in the opening match in the morning, 25-15, 25-22, and they need to win over Badian today to enter the semifinals.

In bracket II, Daanbantayan and Minglanilla shares one victory each.

Daanbantayan won via default after Santa Fe, who is accompanied by municipal mayor Roger Illustrisimo failed to show up on time while Minglanilla walloped Catmon, 25-15, 25-16.

Minglanilla will see action against Daanbantayan and Santa Fe while Daanbantayan goes up against Catmon.

In bracket III, Boljoon and Lapulapu won its respective matches. Boljoon wiped out Oslob, 25-11, 25-16, while Lapulapu defeated Carcar, 25-16, 25-10.

Two matches are still being played as of press time.

Only the top two teams in each bracket will march into the semifinals on December 20 which stakes P100,000 for the champion.
