The Mandaue City belles consummated a three-game sweep to capture the Cluster 6 championship of the 1st Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup yesterday at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.
Mandaue City stretched its stellar run with victories over Liloan, 25-17, and 25-20, and Consolacion, 25-13, 25-10, to romp away with the P10,000 champion's purse. It nailed its first win at the expense of Lapu-Lapu City during the season-opening match last September 21.
Lapu-Lapu City though bounced back with aplomb, whipping Lilo-an in straight sets, 25-20, 25-20, before blasting out Consolacion, 25-14, 25-18 to claim the P5,000 second prize.
Liloan's only consolation in this provincewide tournament organized by the Cebu Volleyball Association (CEVA) and supported by the Cebu Provincial government was its 25-15, 25-9 conquest of Consolacion.
With their resounding triumphs, Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City completed the 12-team cast that will compete in the provincial meet, which dangles a whopping P100,000 to the overall champion.
Joining them are the top two teams per cluster namely Carcar and Minglanilla (C1), Boljoon and Oslob (C2), Toledo and Badian (C3), Catmon and Sogod (C4), and Daan Bantayan and Sta. Fe (C5).
GUV Cup head of secretariat Nona Catipay said the provincial meet will kick off in the first week of December right after the staging of the 23rd Southeast (SEA) Asian Games set from November 27 to December 5.
Catipay said the schedule of games will be determined by the drawing of lots next week, which will be done in conjunction with the awarding of prizes and trophies to the different cluster winners.
Catipay said the venue will be announced anytime this week.
