Boljoon spikers wrest Cluster II tiara

The Boljoon belles repulsed the hard-fighting Oslob squad in three sets to capture the Cluster II crown of the Governor Gwen Garcia Volleyball Unity Cup last Sunday at the Alcoy Sports Center.

Composed mostly of short players, Boljoon was not at its form at the onset on the way to dropping a 20-25 decision to Oslob in the first set.

However, Boljoon, behind the sizzling offense of skipper Michelle Matuguina, staged a daring fightback in the second frame to pull off a 25-17 victory and forge a deciding match. Matuguina is also the team captain of the reigning CESAFI volleyball champion University of San Jose-Recoletos.

Boljoon eventually finished off Oslob in the third set, 25-17, to bag the P10,000 purse and advance into the provincial meet together with Oslob, which received P5,000.

Also a key factor in Boljoon's victory was The Freeman photographer Iste Sesante, who had to take photos in between the game.

Boljoon marched into the finals after dispatching host team Alcoy in the crossover semis, 25-10, 25-15, while Oslob clinhed the other championship berth after eliminating Argao ,25-13, 25-14.
