UV, USC grab titles in CESAFI lawn tennis

The University of the Visayas (UV) and the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) successfully defended its respective crowns in the Cebu Schools Athletic Federation, Inc. (CESAFI) lawn tennis secondary division yesterday at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club.

UV scored an easy victory over the USJ-R, 2-0 mark in the final.

Milo Little Olympics Most Outstanding athlete Francis Largo lead his team to the winners row.

Largo clobbered Jade Labaya, 8-1, in the singles and proceeded with the doubles along with Ryan Repunte in another impressive performance.

Largo and Repunte scored an 8-4 win against Jayvee Canoy and April Joy Ledesma giving UV's third man, James Karl Cañete, a free-ride to victory.

The University of San Carlos grabbed the bronze after silencing the University of Cebu, 2-0.

In the distaff side, USJ-R remained to its throne after dumping USC, 2-0.

Ginalyn Bohol set up the fire for USJ-R and sent USC's Kimberly Tregger away after an 8-2 score.

The tandem of Jin Querubin and Glenna Lambayan survived a thrilling doubles action over the younger Sally Dine Siso and Kristel Mae Buenacosa.

Querubin and Lambayan had to undergo into a sudden death situation before winning the gold.

After a 7-all deadlock, they proceeded with two slides and the sudden death ending at 9-8.

UC claimed the silver even as they are tied with USC in the standings with the former beating over the latter last week.

In the tertiary level, its UV's James Dumoran and Janjie Soquiño of UC are set to fight for the men's singles gold.

Dumoran sent USC's Jerry Juyu-a away with his 6-4, 6-3 win in the semi-finals.

Soquiño, for his part, grabbed the finals ticket only after winning the super tie break against USJ-R's Jason Pinote, 3-6, 7-5, 10-8.

In the women's action, its an all USC cast in the championships through Benebeth Patindol and Stephanie Vasquez.

Patindol and Vasquez advanced to the final round today after defeating Trina Tizon, 6-1, 6-3 and UV's Melly Jane Villarico, 3-6, 6-4, 10-4, respectively. - Caecent O. No-ot
