Talisay City's fate in GUV Cup hangs

- Sona Mae V. Povadora -
The technical committee will have the last say on the fate of Talisay City, which allegedly fielded in one ineligible player in the Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup.

Talisay City, who won the first cluster meet beating, Carcar allegedly field in one non-resident of the municipality in the duration of the two-day tournament.

Technical Committee chairman and head of secretariat Nona Catipay said they have acted upon the issue and will be meeting both parties to hear their side of the story.

"Both camps have presented evidence proving their side," said Catipay during the weekly scoop forum at the Baseline Restaurant and Recreation Center.

In the file protest by Minglanilla, the player, which they asked not to be named until the matter is solved, was a former Talisay resident but transferred to Inawayan after marriage.

If proven, sanctions will be meted to the erring team, said Catipay, and there will be changes in the team standings.

Catipay did not discount the possibility of the lapses made by the officials as the teams have met with the requirements and was vouched by its respective mayors.

"Another match is not necessary, it will going to be a win over the other rule," said Catipay.

Only the top two teams will make it to the provincial meet that stakes P100,000.

"Malu-oy ta sa governor, all she wants for this tournament is for unification. We hope this will not happen again," said Catipay.

On the other hand, cluster II composed of Samboan, Oslob, Santander, Alegria, Argao, Boljoon and Ginatilan will kick off on October 1 with Alcoy as its host team.

Hopefully, next year the GUV Cup will also come up with a men's division that would also promise the same prestige.

"We hope that this would spark interest in sports na nabaayan sa ubang sports," said Andrew Choachuy.

Aside from that, through this province wide tournament that coaches can scout possible players and help get scholarships.
